Question by The Director Of Tennis: How do stand up comedian’s come up with funny material for thier routines ?
Do they copy other comedian’s and change it to make it thier own, or do they invent the material altogether ? I discoverd that when I speak out in front of people I can make them laugh with my dry humor, but I have never tried stand up before, so is it really hard to find funny , new material ? I heard that Dane Cook said he would rather die than start stand up again.

A lot of stand up comedy is just observational humor. The beauty and art of the stand-up comedian is to take mundane every day things that most people can relate to, and make it funny. Ex: Dane Cook’s bit about going through the drive thru.

Most stand up comedians take their normal lives and turn it into a joke. If you listen to a lot of them, they start with so I just got married…or my wife..or my kids…or my friends, and make jokes that way, and they have learned to make it humorous.
Most comedians hire writers. Comedians would like you to THINK that they are naturally that perceptive – and a few of them are – but alike most of show business, it is all a construct. Some leave standup, and write for others, such as Laura Kightlinger. Yes, you periodically see her in tv shoes – but being on the road all the time is no way to live.
I have seen George Carlin live several times. Once, a drunk about 3 rows ahead of me kept interrupting. After telling him several times – in strong language – to stop it, Carlin had him removed. Besides the usual “people have paid a lot of money for this show”, he also said “It took me two years to write this monologue, and several months to memorize it. Interrupting me makes it fall apart. you, sir, are unraveling my doily!” So – it is a learned performance, no matter how spontaneous it LOOKS. I have also seen the same comedian perform the same routine in more than one venue – it’s word-for-word, gesture-for-gesture the same. You expect it of musicinas – it’s the same with comedy.
They’re just funny people..

Most comedic writers carry a small pad of paper everywhere. When they observe something absurd, they jot it down for future reference.
They also eavesdrop on people in restaurants and jot down choice morsels — it’s amazing what ludicrous things people will say in public.
Life. They see something and comment on it.
